Costa Brava – Glamping on a Sunburnt Coast
I dreamed as a kid of being in Hannibal’s army crossing the Alps and becoming victorious in claiming a small patch of land. But today rather than battling with car loads of young people texting their migration route to the next rock concert or columns of LKVs stretching toward the horizon, I prefer flying to Girona.
Ward Wijngaert, 26, the Promotions Manager for Campings in Girona, greeted me at the airport and welcoming me to Costa Brava, ‘the wild coast’. The organization invited me to experience a few of the 78 campground operators they assist in marketing.
His red hair and slight sunburn begged me to question if he was Spanish, my first mistake. “I am Belgium by nationality, but mostly grew up on the Costa Brava,” Ward stated. “Locally I’m known as ‘el Guir’, or ‘the foreigner’ and you have arrived in the autonomous region of Catalonia.” For five days Costa Brava asserted its unique identity of tiny fishing villages that are still tiny fishing villages to ancient churches and gourmet restaurants.
While every campground visited proved its capability to be a holiday treat, I’ve chosen to highlight three campgrounds: Treumal, Languna and Bassegoda Park.
Each of the Campground bungalows were equipped with both air conditioning and heating systems; a full kitchen including pots, dishes and utensils; two bedrooms – with a queen or two single size beds. There’s no need for a military morning rise to beat the masses to communal shower house, as each Bungalow comes complete with a private bathroom. While bed linen and towels are not included in the prices listed, they can be supplied at a cost. Each bungalow had a flat screen TV with Satellite and each campground offered extensive animation programs for both kids and adults.
